Jurgen Klopp has seemingly informed Michael Edwards of his desire to see two new central defenders brought to Liverpool this summer.

The Reds are a staggering 25 points behind Manchester City in the Premier League and given that Klopp’s side are defending champions, you could say it’s been a dismal defence.

But one major reason for that has been the chopping and changing at centre-back since October, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both suffering season-ending knee injuries in that month.

Edwards, the club’s sporting director, dipped into the market in January and signed Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies after Joel Matip joined Van Dijk and Gomez on the long-term absentee list.

Matip had quite literally been getting injured every other week and The Sunday World reports that Liverpool are looking for a long-term, experienced replacement for the injury-prone powerhouse this summer.

The report adds that Klopp is the one who has set the criteria for the type of centre-backs that the German needs in his squad.

Kabak has impressed in a big way over the past month or so, following a shaky start to life at Anfield and it wouldn’t be a big shock if the 21-year-old – who’s on loan from Schalke – is one of the two central defenders that Klopp brings in.

Matip is earning £100,000 per week and has more than three years left on his contract on Merseyside.

And with times tough financially at the moment for a lot of clubs – even the elite ones – it would help Liverpool’s budget if they could save themselves some £15 million by getting the Cameroon international off their wage bill.
