Tottenham Hotspur are determined to keep Toby Alderweireld this summer despite the contract stand-off.
Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld
A report in the Daily Mail has suggested that Tottenham will dig their heels in and hold onto Toby Alderweireld this summer regardless of whether they manage to find a resolution after contract talks with the defender stalled.
The Mail reports that the 28-year-old – whose current deal at White Hart Lane expires in 2020 – wants to essentially double his wages from around £50,000 a week to £110,000 a week, which would see him become one of the highest earners within Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
Alderweireld knows that he could earn that figure elsewhere, but the Mail reports that Spurs are less keen on handing the Belgian such a deal, thus leading to the current stand-off between player and club.
However, before the likes of Manchester City get their hopes up that the door may now be open for a summer swoop, the Mail reports that Tottenham plan to ignore any bids that come in for the centre-back at the end of this season even if an agreement cannot be reached by that stage.

However, what will be slightly more concerning for Tottenham fans is that the Mail suggests that chairman Daniel Levy will not be happy about his contract entering its final two years so next summer may perhaps prove to be a more pivotal window if a new deal has still not been agreed.
While Alderweireld’s age may perhaps be what is putting Spurs off agreeing such terms – he will have entered his 30’s by the time his current deal comes to an end – it is fair to say that the former Southampton man has proved to be a tremendously important player for the squad since joining, and thus, he probably has every right to demand parity with some of the club’s top earners.
