According to The Telegraph, Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence is set to be a man in demand this summer.
It’s stated that Spence has caught the eye of Premier League clubs in 2020, with Neil Warnock comparing him to both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
That’s quite something given that they’re pretty different players; Alexander-Arnold is superb going forward, whilst Wan-Bissaka is a great one-on-one defender with developing attacking play.
Spence being compared to both players is quite the compliment, but with Boro fighting against relegation, they could now lose him.
Three clubs are noted in the report as being in the market for a right back, possibly putting them into the Spence race; Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Southampton.
The Standard reported in January that Tottenham were keen to sign Spence, and Mourinho even took time to congratulate him on the pitch when Spurs drew 1-1 with Boro in a January FA Cup tie.
That may have laid the groundwork for the 19-year-old to join Spurs, and a return to the capital may be appealing to the London-born defender.
West Ham are set to lose Jeremy Ngakia, Pablo Zabaleta has gone and Ryan Fredericks is unconvincing, so Spence would also tick boxes for the Hammers.
Southampton may need to have ideas in mind if they lose Kyle Walker-Peters back to Tottenham, and having been a great home for young players in recent times, so Spence could be attracted by a move there.
If Boro go down, Spence will surely move on – and those three Premier League clubs will be sensing a bargain.
