Tottenham Hotspur missed out in their pursuit of talented French forward Jean-Philippe Mateta this summer.
His agent conformed the news a week ago, stating to Foot Mercato:
“Concerning Tottenham, it is quite clear that the player does not want to go abroad. He is 19, he does not want to skip steps.”
The 19-year-old has attracted the interest of Spurs in recent times – especially after he cracked in a hat-trick against Le Havre in a 5-2 win.
Tottenham however failed to get hold of the player, who has stayed with Chateauroux – at least, for the time being.
It is being reported today by Foot-Sur7 that Lyon president Jean-Michel Alas will be heading back in to sign the player in January and that Spurs will also continue to be keeping tabs on his progress.
Neither club are alone, with Fiorentina, Rennes and Montpellier also interested in the player.
But Spurs will hope that their recent excellent record at bringing in young players can help them convince Mateta that Spurs would be the best destination for him to continue his development as a player – whilst the lure of the Premier League will also be tough to repel.
For now Tottenham will sit back and wait, as Mateta attempts to carve through defences in the French third-tier.
