Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is reportedly looking at Enzo Perez as an alternative to Kevin Strootman.
TalkSPORT has run a report which suggests a reason for Manchester United’s interest in Benfica star Enzo Perez.
The Argentine is one of several players to be linked with a January move to Old Trafford as Louis van Gaal mulls over whether to make a £25 million offer for the 28-year-old.
TalkSPORT points to sources close to United’s boss in explaining van Gaal’s interest in the midfielder.
“Sources close to Van Gaal claim he feels Perez could adapt to life quickly in Manchester,” reads talkSPORT’s report.
It’s important for any new and foreign player to be able to adapt and settle in quickly at a club.
Van Gaal and United are under a lot of pressure this season because of how important it is for the club to finish in the top four and get back into the Champions League.
Therefore, this source seems to be suggesting that the Dutchman would prefer to sign a player he can throw into the team straight away if he makes a big play and spends a lot of cash in the January transfer window.
United are well stocked in terms of central midfield options but there’s still a feeling that they lack a real authoritative figure in the middle of their team and someone who can pull the strings in games against the club’s main rivals.
United remain linked with several other midfield targets and it will be interesting to see where van Gaal decides to divert his attention this winter.
If van Gaal’s interest in Perez is based on needing a player to throw into the team quickly, it’s surprising considering the way he’s handled his squad so far this season, giving younger players a chance to impress.
He’s got enough experience not to have to panic buy and make rash decisions.
