Such a fee would be inflated for the Greek international.

Sunderland are interested in signing Greek international Andreas Samaris from Benfica, according to a report from A Bola.

It is reported that the Black Cats are keen on bringing the player to the club this winter on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The deal will also include a buying option of €20 million (£17.3 million) at the end of the loan agreement. However, Benfica are remiss to accept that as they feel Samaris can go on to be worth much more than that figure. Sunderland would also struggle to afford such a fee in any case.

The 27-year-old Greek international joined the Portuguese side from Olympiakos in 2014. After initially being a key player for the club he has struggled for regular paying time this season and Sunderland are willing to offer him the chance to play first-team football consistently going forward.

However, there is no doubt that the fee mentioned appears to be largely inflated. Benfica would be lucky to receive that for their midfielder, despite his obvious qualities.

Sunderland will just hope to get hold of their man and that he can help them in their battle against relegation.
