Warburton wants a new left-sided centre-back at Nottingham Forest – and his former Rangers defender Wilson is ideal.
Do Nottingham Forest need better defenders or do they simply need to defend better? That is the question on supporter’s lips after another few months of conceding sloppy goals and producing needless individual errors.
Only four teams in the Championship have conceded more than Forest’s 33 goals in 2017/18. And even that is an improvement on last season, where rock-bottom Rotherham United were the only team who could better their goals’ against tally of 72.
So Forest fans will be relieved to learn that the club is at least trying to rectify the issue by dipping into the transfer market. The Nottingham Post claims that a left-sided centre-back is high on Mark Warburton’s shopping list for the New Year.
The question is, however, who fits the bill? Well, perhaps Warburton does not need to look too far for a solution.
Danny Wilson became Warburton’s first signing during his spell in charge of Rangers back in the summer of 2015 – and a reunion at the City Ground could be best for all parties in January.
Wilson, once tipped for greatness by Liverpool and likened to none other than Alan Hansen, has enjoyed a positive run in Rangers’ starting XI in recent weeks and has silenced some of the critics that had lambasted his performances earlier in the campaign.
But his future at Ibrox remains uncertain. Wilson’s contract expires at the end of this season and, with David Bates and Ross McCrorie emerging from within, the writing appears to be on the wall.
Blessed with a sweet left-foot and both trusted and liked by Warburton, Wilson could find a loving home at Forest and slot straight into the back four. But will his former boss be tempted to make a cut-price bid in the New Year?
