Rangers are searching for a new manager after Mark Warburton’s departure.

According to the Daily Mail, Leeds United boss Garry Monk is a possible target for Rangers – but he should stay at Elland Road if there is any interest.

Monk, 37, returned to management last summer, taking over at Leeds United having been sacked by Swansea City in December 2015 following a poor run of results.

The former centre back has rebuilt his reputation with Leeds though, as he has taken the club into the play-off places for much of the season, enabling fans to dream of a return to the Premier League.

His exploits appear to have attracted interest though, as the Daily Mail report that Rangers could look to make a move for Monk, or ex-Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett, after Mark Warburton’s departure.

Rangers announced on Friday that manager Warburton had resigned, along with assistant manager David Weir and head of recruitment Frank McParland, leaving the Gers to weigh up a move for a new boss.

It’s claimed that Rangers could appoint an interim manager until the end of the season before making a big move for a long-term boss, but their chances of landing Monk look slim.

One of the problems Warburton found at Rangers was a lack of major investment, and Monk would likely find similar issues should he make a move to Ibrox, whereas Leeds look to be stable financially right now, and should receive more backing from new co-owner Andrea Radrizzani.

For any manager with no prior ties to Rangers, the lure of heading to Glasgow is the chance to rebuild the club and take them back to their former glories, challenging Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership as well as returning to European football.

However, Monk is already taking on a similar challenge with Leeds, and could even guide the club back to the Premier League this season, meaning Rangers would be a sideways move at best for Monk at this stage in his managerial career.

Right now, Monk looks to be building something special at Elland Road, whilst Rangers are struggling – and although the Gers are a huge club, so are Leeds, and any move to Ibrox from Monk would be a huge surprise right now, meaning Rangers may have to look elsewhere.
