Glasgow Rangers are not the only club to have been linked with a move for Docherty, and may not have the funds to bring him to Ibrox.
Rangers could lose out to Cardiff City in their pursuit of Greg Docherty’s signature.
The Sun reports on its live blog that Cardiff are ‘ready to win the £1 million race’ for the Hamilton Academical midfielder, adding that Rangers ‘might not have the funds to compete’ with Neil Warnock’s Championship promotion-chasers.
Rangers – who have again been credited with interest in Fulham midfielder Kevin McDonald [also the Sun] – have only made loan signings so far this window, recruiting Sean Goss and Jamie Murphy from Queens Park Rangers and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively.
However, the departure of Carlos Pena to Cruz Azul, which follows Myles Beerman’s loan to Queen of the South and Aaron Nemane’s return to Manchester City, may give Graeme Murty some added leeway.
Finding new homes for exit-linked Pedro Caixinha signings Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardoso, Eduardo Herrera and Dalcio could also help to fund new arrivals such as Docherty.
However, Rangers may not have much time if the Sun’s report is to be believed.
Docherty, a product of the Hamilton academy which produced Premier League pair James McCarthy and James McArthur, has scored three goals and made another six in 21 league appearances for the Accies this campaign.
