Newcastle United may miss out on Gimnasia attacker Jan Hurtado.
According to Argentinian newspaper El Dia, Gimnasia president Gabriel Pellegrino has been in Italy to talk to clubs about a deal for attacker Jan Hurtado.
Hurtado, 19, may have only hit five goals and one assist in 27 games for Gimnasia this past season, but the Venezuelan is already attracting major interest.
Already a full international, Hurtado is expected to move on soon for a move to Europe, and it’s claimed that Atalanta, Lazio and Sampdoria are keen amid Pellegrino’s trip to Italy.
Whether one of those clubs will move remains to be seen, but the news will be a blow to Newcastle United as they continue to battle for Rafael Benitez’s future.
Benitez is out of contract at the end of the month, and until they can seal the Spaniard’s future, they can’t bring in any new signings – and that may cause them to miss out on Hurtado.
Grupo La Provincia recently claimed that Newcastle have made a first approach for Hurtado, seemingly aiming to sign him as well as his Venezuelan international teammate Salomon Rondon.
Newcastle haven’t been able to firm up their interest due to the uncertainty over Benitez, and with Gimnasia gauging interest from Italian clubs, this wait may well mean that Hurtado doesn’t head to St James’ Park after all.
