According to La Razon, Newcastle could make a move for Atlético Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who has a release clause in his contract.

What’s the story?

Well, the Spanish news outlet relay comments from Kieran Trippier, who teased Newcastle fans by suggesting the Slovenian could join Newcastle.

Oblak is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers on the planet, so it would be a huge statement if the Magpies secured his signature.

Interestingly, La Razon state that the 29-year-old has a release clause worth €120m (£100m) in his contract at the Wanda Metropolitano, which Newcastle could trigger.

After the Saudi Arabian takeover, they definitely have the funds to do so.

It is also said that Atlético Madrid may have to cash in, as Oblak’s deal expires in June 2023 and he is yet to sign a renewal.

Jan Oblak to Newcastle would be a massive statement

If Newcastle are to catch up with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, they need to be making moves like this.

In addition to the fact Oblak is one of the best players in Europe, his arrival would also be a positive as it would create a snowball effect.

If other world class players saw someone like Oblak move to Tyneside, it would potentially entice them into doing the same.

In some ways, the Slovenia international could be Newcastle’s answer to Robinho, who kickstarted Sheik Mansour’s reign at Manchester City.

Keep an eye on this saga, as a move for Oblak certainly seems possible.
