Newcastle have strangely been mentioned in the same breath as Jose Mourinho with the 59-year-old’s future clouded in uncertainty.
That is according to Roma Live, who believe the Portuguese tactician is not expected to stay in Rome with his contract set to expire in July 2024.
Thomas Tuchel is said to be the chosen replacement for Mourinho if he does depart, which is where Newcastle weirdly come into the conversation.
Mourinho would leave for Newcastle
Well, the Italian news outlet believe Mourinho is yet to decide whether to sign a contract extension or not, and Roma Live claim that another approach from Newcastle may be enough to take him away from Rome.
They are, presumably, referring to Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi’s initial search for a Steve Bruce replacement, although we have no idea why they would want anyone other than Eddie Howe right now.
The 44-year-old has impressively guided Newcastle to third in the Premier League as we approach the World Cup break, losing just one game from 14 in England’s top-flight.
In truth, the Magpies could be even higher had they turned their six frustrating draws – most of which they were the better side in – into wins.
Newcastle surely won’t go back in for Mourinho
In our view, even if Howe does end up faltering and is given his P45 by Staveley and Ghodoussi, Newcastle won’t go near Mourinho.
Despite the fact he boasts 217 wins in the Premier League, and also three Premier League titles, the 59-year-old is not the manager he once was.
Mourinho has been sacked from his past three roles in the Premier League, with Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham all giving up on him – usually due to uninspiring football and rifts with some of his players.
Whatever happens with his contract at Roma, it would be seriously surprising if Newcastle ever made another approach for Mourinho.
