Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
After seeing several of their key players leave St Mary’s once Liverpool came calling in recent years, Southampton fans may finally have reason to welcome some interest from Jurgen Klopp’s men, with the Daily Mail reporting that the Reds are interested in Fraser Forster.
The Champions League winners have had an issue between the sticks throughout pre-season. Alisson has not long been back in training after helping Brazil win the Copa America, and that led to free agent Andy Lonergan getting the chance to train with the club.
The Daily Mail reports that Klopp wants to add another goalkeeper to his ranks, and it is suggested that Forster is one player that he would be interested in signing.
Forster has become something of a forgotten man for the Saints over the last 18 months. He initially lost his place to Alex McCarthy after a poor run of form, and now appears to be third choice following last summer’s arrival of Angus Gunn.
The Daily Echo recently reported that Ralph Hasenhuttl needs to offload some of his fringe players if he hopes to make further signings, so the chance to get rid of Forster may well be something he would seriously consider.
Spotrac reports that Forster earns £70,000-a-week, so his departure would free up a significant amount of funds ahead of the final days of the window.
It could be a move that suits all parties. Given the funds required, Forster looks unlikely to seal a number one spot elsewhere. So joining Liverpool could make a lot of sense as the Reds look to add another stopper and the Saints look for a late boost to their transfer kitty.
