Portuguese Under-23 star Tobias Figueiredo looks certain to leave Primeira Liga giants Sporting Lisbon with Leeds United circling.
There is a very real chance that Leeds United could have a new centre-back in January in the shape of Tobias Figueiredo.
Portuguese publication Desporto ao Minuto claimed on Thursday that the Sporting Lisbon defender was the subject of an inquiry from Leeds. The report added that the Championship giants were willing to meet Sporting’s £3.5 million asking price.
And Record has provided an update on the situation on Tuesday, adding credence to suggestions that the Portuguese Under-23 ace could be on his way to Elland Road.
It is understood that Figueiredo is not in the plans of Sporting boss Jorge Jesus and all the signs are pointing to his departure from the Estadio Jose Alvalade in the New Year. The report adds that England is his most likely destination.
This should give Leeds real hope, then, that they will be able to strike a deal sooner rather than later.
Figueiredo has struggled to establish himself in Sporting’s first-team but has impressed for Portugal’s various youth ranks, helping the Iberian nation reach the final of the Under-21 European Championships in 2015, where they lost to Sweden.
The defender is renowned for his strength in the air and should offer further physicality at centre-half – along with some much needed depth to take the pressure of Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper.
