According to The Times, Arsenal are unlikely to be able to convince Mesut Ozil to terminate his contract before the January transfer window.
It has been reported that the Gunners were unable to persuade the 31-year-old attacking midfielder to take a pay-off and terminate his contract in the summer transfer window, with his current deal to run out next summer.
The former Real Madrid star told Arsenal that he plans to see out his contract, which is worth £350,000 a week, according to the report.
The Times have further claimed that although the Premier League club will renew those efforts, it is ‘unlikely that they will be successful until closer to the January transfer window’.
What to do with Mesut Ozil?
Ozil has not played for Arsenal since March, and it is hard to see the German take a pay-off and leave the North London club anytime soon.
Perhaps Mikel Arteta should look into making use of the former Madrid star, described as “a top quality footballer” and “a great player, with proven quality at both club and international level” by then Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger on the Gunners’ official website in September 2013.
Even as a player on the substitutes’ bench, Ozil would be a good option to have for the Gunners, especially with the club aiming to finish in the top four of the Premier League table this season.
True, Ozil has not been at his best for a while now, but his vision and creativity is still there.
