Wolfsburg have promised Wout Weghorst the reported Tottenham Hotspur target can leave if there is “serious interest” but, according to Kicker, the Bundesliga outfit are relaxed about the Dutchman’s future.

There’s a certain profile of striker who tends to thrive under Jose Mourinho.

Consider Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Romelu Lukaku, Didier Drogba – three powerhouse centre-forwards who would strike fear into the heart of almost every defender on the planet due to their sheer size not to mention ruthless finishing.

Weghorst may not be at that level yet but the 6ft 6in Dutchman feels like a forward in the Mourinho mould.

And with the Tottenham boss making it clear a number nine is top priority with little more than a week remaining in the transfer window, the late-blooming targetman has joined the likes of Carlos Vinicius and Arkadiusz Milik on a lengthy hit list.

The Express reports Weghorst, desperate to force his way into Holland’s Euro 2021 squad, would be willing to swap his star role at Wolfsburg to become Harry Kane’s back-up at Tottenham.

However, according to Kicker no-one at the VFL Arena is suffering from sleepless nights just yet. Weghorst has been promised he will be free to leave if a big club comes calling – but Wolfsburg are confident the former AZ Alkmaar talisman will still be in Germany when the window shuts.

After Kane and Heung-Min Son combined like vintage Cole and Yorke to batter Southampton on Sunday, Wolfsburg director Marcel Schafer suggested the £32 million-rated Weghorst would be better off staying put.

“Son scored four times, Kane scored (too). So Wout should stay with us,” he told Sportschau.
