News reports emanating from Spain suggest that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is preparing a £40 million bid for Real Madrid star and long-term target Karim Benzema, according to Merca Futbol.
The Gunners strengthened their squad immeasurably over the summer, but there is still that nagging doubt whether they have enough to win the Premier League and challenge in the Champions League without the presence of a truly world-class striker.
The 28-year-old Frenchman certainly would fit that bill, although it is debatable whether Wenger would splash out such a large fee on a striker fastly approaching 30.

Merca Futbol report that Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is determined to keep hold of Benzema, but if the Spanish giants were offered a fee in the region of £40 million, they would find it hard to turn down.
If Arsenal were to sign Benzema, he would undoubtedly improve them, and offer them an entirely different option to current first-choice striker Olivier Giroud.

The Frenchman’s goalscoring record speaks for itself. He has scored 219 goals in 435 appearances for Lyon and Real Madrid.

One thing that cannot be ignored is Benzema’s continued off-field problems, and the Arsenal boss would have to weigh these up against the obvious talent he possesses before making a decision.
He certainly has the ability to turn the Gunners into champions rather than mere also-rans, and if there is a possibility of signing him, Wenger should make every effort to make it happen.
