Tottenham Hotspur star Erik Lamela wants to extend his stay at White Hart Lane.

Reports emanating from Italy suggest that Argentine winger Erik Lamela is the latest Spurs star that the club are trying to tie down to a new long-term contract, according to Italian media outlet TuttoMercatoWeb.

The 24-year-old former Roma star arrived at White Hart Lane under a wave of expectation in the summer of 2013, but has failed to live up to his reputation on a regular enough basis, scoring just 19 goals in 121 appearances for his club.

The report form TuttoMercatoWeb claims that Tottenham still have high hopes for Lamela though, and have already begun discussions over the possibility of a new deal, with further talks planned for the coming weeks.

Lamela himself declared his intention to extend his deal in north London just last month when he spoke to the Evening Standard:

“It would make me happy to play for more years in this shirt. Will I be the next to sign? Let’s hope so.”

The 23-capped Argentine international has made 14 appearances for the Lilywhites so far this term, but has not been the influential figure that he or his manager Mauricio Pochettino would have liked him to be, with just two goals and three assists registered in those outings.

His potential to reach great heights is obviously something that Spurs have not given up on, however, and judging by the report, they still see Lamela as one for the future.
