Ahead of the international break, Erwin van de Looi called Newcastle defender Sven Botman up to the Netherlands Under-21 squad.
However, the 22-year-old decided to ignore his inclusion in the squad in preference of staying on Tyneside, in a bid to force his way into the starting XI under Eddie Howe.
The 44-year-old believes Botman made the right decision, saying: “Sven wanted to develop to be able to handle the level in the Premier League. He has done this very well. Sven has trained well in these two weeks and he will certainly benefit from that.”
However, Dutch outlet Voetbal International think the £32m man has made a big mistake.
Sven Botman may now suffer from Newcastle stay
Well, Botman’s choice has come at a terrible time.
The 22-year-old didn’t appear likely to have any chance of being selected for the World Cup squad by Louis van Gaal, as he is yet to be capped for the senior side.

Now, an opening has emerged after Bruno Martins Indi suffered an injury.
However, Voetbal International believe Van Gaal – who isn’t afraid to speak his mind – is now less likely to call upon Botman following his decision to snub the Netherlands Under-21 side.
Van de Looi also wasn’t impressed by the Dutchman’s choice, admitting that he is “disappointed” by the youngster.
Sven Botman hasn’t harmed Newcastle chances
While Botman seems to have upset those on the international scene, he will be relieved to hear the aforementioned comments from Howe, which suggests those at St James’ Park are pleased with his decision.
The big-money signing from Lille has started four of Newcastle’s seven Premier League games so far this season, although he clearly isn’t satisfied with that.
Hopefully, Botman can now become a regular starter for the Magpies after impressing Howe with his dedication, and in the long run, his career for the Netherlands won’t be affected.
