Manchester United’s Memphis Depay is reportedly surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, and West Ham United should consider making a move.
Reports emerging from France today claim that Memphis Depay will reject a January switch to Ligue 1 side Marseille, because he wants to remain in the Premier League, according to French media outlet Le 10 Sport.
If the Red Devils to decide to part with the Depay, West Ham should make a bold move, and take a gamble on the Dutchman, in the hope that he will one day evolve into the world-class performer that many believe he is capable of becoming.
Manchester United’s Memphis Depay in action
The 22-year-old has struggled to assert himself in the Manchester United side since his £25 million move to Old Trafford in the summer of 2015, making just 16 Premier League starts, and scoring only twice.
While his ability is beyond question, his attitude has been called into question on numerous occasions, not only during his time in Manchester, but also during his spell with previous club PSV Eindhoven.
The Hammers have made a woeful start to their campaign, and are in desperate need of an injection of pace and intent in their forward line, after their summer recruitment has so far proved to be anything but a success.
Depay has a huge point to prove to everyone, and a move away from Manchester could offer him the chance to re-establish himself and reinvigorate his career.
West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic
Slaven Bilic is the kind of manager who could potentially get the best out of the mercurial Dutchman, with his hands on approach to management.
The United winger would give the East London side an entirely different option across their frontline, and although a move for Depay would represent somewhat of a gamble, it could also turn out to be one of the signings of the season, if he chooses to apply himself in the correct manner.
Sometimes in football, fans and the media are too quick to judge foreign imports.
Someone of Depay’s age should be allowed a little more time to prove himself before he is written off as a failure, and a move to West Ham could be just the tonic he needs to showcase his true potential.
