According to The Scottish Sun, Stoke City are now making checks on Aberdeen striker Sam Cosgrove ahead of a potential bid.
It’s claimed that boss Michael O’Neill is a big admirer of Cosgrove, and Stoke watched Cosgrove in action against Rangers earlier this month.
Aberden would allegedly want close to £2.7million for Cosgrove having received a similar bid from Guingamp over the summer, with just 18 months left on his contract now.
The 24-year-old has scored just three goals in 12 games this season, but his total record of 47 goals and 10 assists in 101 games for the Dons is hugely impressive.
Cosgrove is a big, physical target man, and if O’Neill does manage to sign him for Stoke, he would be leaving his former club Newcastle United disappointed.
O’Neill turned out for Newcastle between 1987 and 1989, and The Scottish Sun claim that Newcastle are showing an interest in signing Cosgrove.
Cosgrove could be seen as a bargain addition up top for Newcastle, given that Steve Bruce feels he needs another centre forward in light of Andy Carroll’s contract uncertainty.
A Premier League move would surely appeal to Cosgrove, but if Stoke can offer a key role under O’Neill, they may just have a chance.
