Newcastle United reportedly wanted to sign Stoke City defender Erik Pieters in the summer transfer window.

Stoke City defender Erik Pieters is open to joining Newcastle United in the January transfer window, according to The Chronicle.

Newcastle reportedly wanted to sign Pieters from Championship club Stoke in the summer transfer window.

The report, though, has claimed that Magpies’ manager Rafael Benitez could struggle to convince his board to part with a big fee for the 30-year-old Netherlands international left-back.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle are looking at signing a left-back in the January transfer window due to the injury suffered by Paul Dummett during the international break.

Good left-back

Pieters has played 15 times in the Championship for Stoke so far this season, scoring two goals and providing one assist in the process, according to WhoScored.

The Dutchman is an important player for the Potters, and it is hard to see the Championship club letting go of the 30-year-old without demanding a decent transfer fee.

Pieters has been on the books of Stoke since the summer of 2013 when he joined from PSV Eindhoven for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £3 million.
