Petrov played for Aston Villa for seven years during his playing career.

The Birmingham Mail have reported that Stiliyan Petrov has applied to become Aston Villa’s new manager as the club look to replace Steve Bruce during the international break.
Villa decided to end Bruce’s tenure at Villa which lasted almost two years, after the Midlands outfit failed to beat Preston North End at home – with Glenn Whelan missing a penalty in injury time.
The Guardian have claimed that the Championship outfit have drawn up a five-man shortlist for the job, including Celtic’s Brendan Rodgers, Brentford’s Dean Smith, Belgium assistant Thierry Henry and ex-Man United assistant Rui Faria.
Now, the Birmingham Mail claim that 39-year-old Petrov has applied to become the club’s new manager, having last played professionally for Villa in 2013 after a seven-year spell at Villa Park.

The report indicates that in February, Bulgarian Petrov underwent an assessment for his UEFA A coach license, and has previously worked alongside Aston Villa’s Under-23 manager Gordon Cowans.
The favourite remains, though, to be Henry while Mick McCarthy and Dwight Yorke have admitted that they would like to be given a chance in the role as Bruce’s replacement. Villa currently sit in 15th after a 2-1 loss to Millwall on Saturday.
