Steven Gerrard’s Rangers are facing competition from Nottingham Forest to bring Britt Assombalonga to Ibrox, according to The Athletic.
Rangers are interested in signing Assombalonga in the summer transfer window, according to a report in TEAMtalk last weekend, which added that the Gers are the favourites for the 28-year-old, who has been told by Middlesbrough that he can leave this summer.
However, The Athletic has now reported that Assombalonga’s former club Forest want to sign the DR Congo international striker, described as “outstanding” by former Rangers manager Mark Warburton on Brentford’s official website in November 2014.
Rangers or Nottingham Forest?
Forest are a massive club in England and Assombalonga knows the Reds, but they may not be able to challenge for the Championship playoffs next season.
The Reds have long been an also-ran in the Championship, while Rangers have won the Scottish Premiership title this season and could play in the Champions League in 2021-22.
True, Assombalonga would have to compete with Kemar Roofe, Cedric Itten, Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe (if he signs a new contract) for a place in the starting lineup, but he could find Rangers more appealing than Forest.
