Will the English legend join Celtic? Not according to this report.
The Glasgow Evening Times has reported that Steven Gerrard’s prospective switch to Celtic in January is unlikely to materialise.
The Liverpool icon has been linked with a move to Parkhead this winter to team up with manager Brendan Rodgers, whom he worked with at Anfield.
Some bookmakers have priced the 36-year-old midfielder as short as 1/1 to join the Hoops.
Former Celtic man Andy Lynch told The Daily Record at the weekend it was “very probable” that the England legend could be playing for the Bhoys shortly.
But The Glasgow Evening Times have written that the fairytale is unlikely to come true due to Gerrard’s wage demands.
The Mirror reported in 2015 that Los Angeles Galaxy are paying Gerrard over £4 million per year, equating to roughly £80,000 a week and the Scottish champions may struggle to match it.
At 36, it seems improbable that the legendary midfielder would accept a wage cut – let alone a huge one – in what is very much the twilight of a fantastic career.
Plus, Celtic probably don’t even need him at the moment. Tom Rogic and Scott Brown have been in fine form for the Premiership leaders – who lead Aberdeen by 10 points – and perhaps it is fair to say that Gerrard would be a needless signing by Rodgers.
