Report: Steven Gerrard tells Rangers duo they are surplus to requirements

Gerrard was seen at Ibrox for the first time since taking over as Rangers manager on Wednesday.

Steven Gerrard was seen entering Ibrox for the first time as Rangers manager on Wednesday in what was a busy day for the ex-Liverpool and England captain.

The Gers confirmed the signing of Connor Goldson from Premier League outfit Brighton, as well as placing Peter Lovenkrands in charge of the academy. Joe Dodoo joined Blackpool on loan.

Now, The Daily Mail claimed Gerrard’s first day at Ibrox also saw the Rangers boss inform midfielders Andy Halliday and Jason Holt that they are surplus to requirements at Rangers.

The Gers have signed midfielders Scott Arfield from Burnley and Ovie Ejaria from Liverpool on a season-long loan, adding to what is already plenty of competition in the middle of the park.

Halliday, 26, was loaned to Azerbaijani side FK Gabala during the first half of the 2017-18 campaign, but returned in January. However, he made just five league starts upon his return.

Holt was much more involved in the side, and even captained the Gers under Graeme Murty three times in the league. He made a total of 33 appearances in all competitions, and is perhaps slightly more surprising of the two.

But it seems as though Gerrard is unfazed in wielding the axe at Ibrox, as he and Gary McAllister look to orchestrate a summer revamp ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.
