Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is set to accept a coaching role at the club’s academy, the Daily Telegraph reports.
Gerrard announced his retirement from professional football yesterday and looks set to take a path into coaching after turning down the manager’s job at MK Dons. He is also expected to work as a pundit.
The Telegraph reports that his coaching role at Liverpool’s academy is likely to be under the guidance of Academy Director Alex Inglethorpe and his mentor – and former Liverpool player – Steve Heighway.
The report goes on to say the lure of Gerrard rejoining his boyhood club is too much to resist, and in terms of his progress as a coach, Gerrard is currently doing his UEFA ‘A’ licence with the assistance of the staff at Liverpool.

It seems the Reds are prepared to use Gerrard in whatever way they can in order to help their younger players develop in the future. Having Gerrard around the club for youngsters – who will have either watched him in the flesh or on television – could act as great inspiration for aspiring footballers.
This seems to be an arrangement that could benefit both Gerrard and the club – as he gets some coaching experience in an environment that is familiar to him as he tries to make his own way in that side of the game – while the academy has another selling point when it comes to recruiting younger players, and players already at the academy get some experience working under one of the club’s greatest ever players.
