Steve McClaren wants a reunion with Chris Evans at Derby County, according to Wednesday’s Sun newspaper.

Evans was employed as Derby’s head of football operations but resigned in September 2015 – four months after McClaren’s departure.

But having returned to the club as manager earlier this month, McClaren is keen to bring Evans back as director of football, the report claims.

Evans helped to secure a number key loan signings – notably, George Thorne, Tom Ince and Darren Bent – during his last spell at the iPro Stadium and his skills could come in handy during the January transfer window.

After tendering his resignation, the Welshman paid tribute to Derby County chairman Mel Morris and chief executive Sam Rush.

“Sam Rush has been an inspiration and I thank him for his support in putting together a squad which will hopefully help the club achieve its Premier League objective,” Evans said, as quoted by the Derby Telegraph.

“I must also pay tribute to Mel Morris whose vision, drive and leadership will ensure Derby has a very bright future.”

Evans began his coaching career in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ academy and later worked under Gary Megson at Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield Wednesday – Derby County’s next opponents.

The Rams, who finished fifth last season, have suffered a dreadful start to the new campaign and are two points above the relegation places in 21st.
