Former Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren is in talks over a return to Derby County, according to the Daily Mirror.
It is claimed that caretaker boss Chris Powell will remain in charge of the Rams, with McClaren offered the chance to work alongside him in some capacity.
However, conflicting reports suggest that McClaren could be appointed as director of football or even manager, with Powell as his number 2.
Talks are said to be taking place today, with confirmation of the 55-year-old’s return possible on Thursday.
McClaren, who played for Derby during the 1980s, managed the club for two just shy of two years until May 2015.
However, despite leading the Rams to the Championship play-off final during the previous campaign, a disappointing eighth-place finish saw the Yorkshireman vacate his post.
Newcastle United, who had been linked with McClaren earlier in 2015, later appointed him as manager, only to wield the axe in March this year with the Magpies languishing close to the bottom of the Premier League.
Derby are currently without a manager following Nigel Pearson’s dismissal on Saturday. However, many bookmakers are declining to take bets on Pearson’s successor, with Powell expected to remain in the hotseat.
The former Derby defender has taken four points from his two games in charge so far.
