The Scot was left hanging by Cellino during the latter days of his reign at Leeds United.

When Massimo Cellino finally, mercifully swung the axe on Steve Evans at the end of last season, the overriding feeling was that the manager, no matter how divisive, had been treated extremely harshly.
According to The Express, Evans was kept waiting for three weeks not knowing whether he would be handed a P45 or an extension at Elland Road. The progress made this season under Garry Monk suggests that the former was the correct call though the almost cruel way that the current Mansfield Town boss was forced to hang on to hope was typical of the Cellino regime.
And, perhaps unsurprisingly considering the volatile nature of both the loud-mouthed gaffer and the combustible Italian, the temperature soon reached boiling point.
According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Evans eventually approached Leeds United secretary Stuart Hayton and demanded that Cellino sack him. ‘The Manager Eater’, as he is known in his home country, had even gone as far as to ignore his manager’s phone calls.

In fairness to Evans, he accepted the decision with good grace though the drawn-out saga summed up the erratic nature of Leeds under Cellino’s reign.
Hopefully, with Garry Monk in charge and the club keen to tie him down to a new deal, those days are over.
