The Scot was number 2 to previous Villa boss Roberto Di Matteo.
Aston Villa caretaker manager Steve Clarke was interviewed over the permanent role on Monday, according to the Telegraph.
Clarke arrived as Roberto Di Matteo’s sidekick in June but remained after the Italian’s dismissal a week ago.
It is said that the Scot has impressed Villa’s staff and players alike with both his attitude and work at the training ground, prompting his interview at the club’s Bodymoor Heath base.
The report adds that Di Matteo’s successor is expected to be announced before Saturday’s visit of Wolverhampton Wanderers and could come as early as Wednesday.
However, former Hull City boss Steve Bruce remains the overwhelming favourite, having admitted to already holding talks.
Clarke is a well respected figure within the game and worked as assistant manager at Chelsea, West Ham United and Liverpool, before spells as a number 1 at West Bromwich Albion and Reading, who sacked him in December last year.
Should the 53-year-old fail to land to top job at Villa Park, he is likely to follow Di Matteo out of the club, with Middlesbrough’s Steve Agnew and Manchester United’s Warren Joyce said to have been lined up as potential number 2s.
