According to a report from The Sun, Steve Bruce is a big admirer of Preston North End defender Ben Davies and is now keen to take the defender to Newcastle this summer.

Bruce is still awaiting his first signing since being unveiled as the new boss at St James’ Park this month. He arguably needs to strengthen his options in a number of areas, and it appears that one position he wants to add to is at centre-back.

The Sun reports that the Magpies are interested in Davies, who has been a revelation at Deepdale since returning from a loan spell at Fleetwood Town in 2017 and establishing himself as a key man at the heart of the North End defence.

The 23-year-old made 40 appearances for Alex Neil’s men in the Championship last season, as Preston found themselves right in the play-off mix right up until the international break halted their momentum in mid-March.

Davies is an exciting talent that is more than comfortable when playing out from the back. So it seems extremely unlikely that Newcastle will be able to land the youngster on the cheap, especially when you consider some of the fees clubs are reportedly having to pay for Championship stars this summer.

What may encourage Neil however, is that Newcastle hardly lack options at centre-back, so the Magpies may be more willing to walk away from talks if Preston demand a significant fee, which, given that he is one of their most impressive players, seems more than likely.
