Newcastle United are reportedly keen on Andy Carroll.
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce is interested in handing a return to former Magpies striker Andy Carroll – providing he can prove his fitness.
Newcastle are close to signing Hoffenheim striker Joelinton to bolster Bruce’s attacking options, having lost Ayoze Perez and seen loanee Salomon Rondon follow Rafael Benitez to Dalian Yifang.
Joelinton can’t be the only striker signed though, and it’s now claimed that new manager Bruce is keen on re-signing striker Carroll to add another body to his attack.
Bruce is thought to be a big fan of Carroll, and would be interested in signing him if the can prove his fitness having endured all manner of injury problems over the course of his career.
Former Newcastle ace Carroll is a boyhood Magpies fan, just like Bruce, and whilst his 2011 exit to Liverpool was criticised, he’s thought to be interested in re-joining.
Carroll, 30, is a free agent having been released by West Ham United this summer, where he only managed more than 20 league appearances in a season twice in seven years.
The giant striker is a real threat when fit and firing, but it’s a long time since we’ve seen that. Just four goals in 32 games over the last two seasons is far from inspiring, and with fans already disgruntled, a move for Carroll may make matters worse.
Remarkably though, Newcastle fans have already predicted that Bruce will end up bringing Carroll back to St. James’ Park, and whilst a deal may only go through in a few weeks given that he’s a free agent, a move really could be on the cards.
