Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce is reportedly closing in on the Newcastle United job.
According to a report from The Sun, Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce has held a meeting with Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley as he seemingly closes in on making the move to St James’ Park.
After seeing a number of names linked, the Toon Army appear to be edging closer towards finding out who Rafa Benitez’s successor is going to be.
The Sun reports that Bruce has now met with Charnley to discuss the position on Tyneside, and he is now closing in on leaving the Owls and taking the job with his boyhood club.
Although Bruce may not be an incredibly popular choice amongst the fans, he is arguably the kind of manager that is not going to be overawed by the prospect of trying to fill the void left by Benitez following his departure earlier in the summer.
Former Sunderland boss Bruce boasts an enormous amount of experience in the top two leagues, and is used to going into a job with something to prove given that he has now managed both Sheffield clubs, as well as both Birmingham City and Aston Villa.
Benitez’s popularity and Bruce’s links with the Black Cats means however, that the Wednesday boss will probably need to hit the ground running if he wants to avoid being written off by the majority of the supporters should he get the Newcastle job.
