According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has made an enquiry for Manchester United defender Phil Jones.
It’s claimed that Newcastle had a deal for Arsenal defender Rob Holding collapse, so Bruce turned his attention to other central defenders.
Jones is one of them, with enquiries made about his availability as well as Manchester United teammate Chris Smalling.
United would surely let Jones go, having made just eight appearances for the Red Devils last season and with no plans for him moving forward.
The 28-year-old joined United for £16m from Blackburn Rovers in 2011, with many tipping him for stardom with United and England having impressed at Ewood Park.
Whilst Jones has made more than 200 appearances for United, he has failed to live up to his potential and and really needs to leave United in search of first-team football.

Jones still has almost three years left on his United deal though, so offloading him won’t be easy; Newcastle are in no position to splash cash, and may want a loan deal.
Bruce has strong ties to former club United, and that could help Newcastle secure a deal – but with just a few days of the transfer window left, the Magpies need to be quick.
