Newcastle United are still chasing Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce.
According to The Mirror, Newcastle United will make Steve Bruce the lowest-paid manager in the Premier League – and he wants Graham Carr back at St James’ Park.
The Magpies are still attempting to prise Bruce away from Sheffield Wednesday, in what has proven to be a more difficult deal than first expected.
Wednesday are wanting hefty compensation for Bruce and coaches Stephen Clemence and Steve Agnew, but Newcastle are pressing ahead with their attempts to land the 58-year-old.
Bruce is of course interested in managing his boyhood club, even to the point of accepting a deal to become the Premier League’s worst-paid manager on £1million-a-year; for context, Rafael Benitez was earning £6million-a-year before his exit last month.
Another interesting line in the report is that Bruce wants former Newcastle chief scout Carr back at the club, believing he has the experience and contacts to bolster the Magpies.
Carr is credited with signings players like Mathieu Debuchy, Yohan Cabaye, Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse, Hatem Ben Arfa and Cheick Tiote, though he did bring in a number of flops too.
In 2017, Carr left Newcastle after something of a power struggle with Benitez (The Independent), which Rafa ultimately won as the 74-year-old departed St James’ Park.
Bruce and Carr both hail from Corbridge in Northumberland, which may play something of a factor in the relationship between the two, and if Bruce’s move goes through, expect to see Carr join him – as long as Mike Ashley allows it.
