According to The Sunday Mirror (02/08, p66), Amanda Staveley wanted to bring Steve Cooper to Newcastle United last summer.
The report detailed Staveley’s plans for Newcastle over the last year, having long wanted to purchase Newcastle.
Staveley has again failed to buy the club, but she may well return in the future – and this report about her plans will be interesting to fans.
One note suggests that, had Staveley managed to buy the club last summer, she would have wanted Steve Cooper to join Newcastle.
Cooper would have been offered a role with Newcastle’s Under-23 side, but he instead became Swansea City’s new manager.
Cooper, 40, left his role at England Under-17’s boss to make the move to Swansea, and guided them to the Championship playoffs in his first season as a manager.
Staveley seemingly saw his work in the England youth setup as well as with Liverpool, and wanted to bring him to Newcastle to coach their prospects.
Cooper likely doesn’t feel like he missed out, as senior coaching is now his priority rather than youth coaching – and after a strong first season at Swansea, it’s Newcastle who may have missed out.
