Newcastle United explored a deal for Maximilian Philipp last month.
According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United wanted to take Borussia Dortmund’s Maximilian Philipp on loan in January – but they ended their interest over the terms in the deal.
The Magpies landed two signings in January, with left back Antonio Barreca and playmaker Miguel Almiron both arriving on deadline day to bolster Rafael Benitez’s squad.
A host of other players were linked with moves to St James’ Park, and one of those was Borussia Dortmund forward Philipp.
The Chronicle report that Newcastle were interested in signing the German, but backed away when learning Dortmund’s terms.
They seemingly wanted a considerable fee for a permanent deal added into a loan, and Newcastle weren’t interested in that so ended negotiations there.
Philipp, 24, joined Dortmund from Freiburg in 2017, and showed promise last season with nine goals to his name, but a serious knee injury stalled his impact.
This term, Philipp has picked up just two goals and two assists whilst making 11 starts, one of which came in the Champions League earlier this season.
Philipp played for an hour last night so is seemingly getting playing time despite his Newcastle move failing, with the Magpies no doubt delighted to just get Almiron anyway.
