According to The Telegraph, Liverpool are currently reluctant to rule defender Virgil van Dijk out for the rest of the season.
Van Dijk suffered a knee injury in Saturday’s 2-2 draw away at Everton, with Jordan Pickford’s challenge meaning he had to be substituted.
Fans have been fearing the worst with Van Dijk, and Liverpool have now confirmed that the Dutchman will have to undergo surgery.
The Telegraph note that the injury is indeed a torn anterior cruciate ligament, but the Reds are reluctant to rule him out for the season.
Liverpool seemingly hope that Van Dijk’s recovery goes well and he can make it back before the end of the season, though that does seem unlikely.
The report adds that midfielder Thiago has been assessed having gone down to a strong challenge by Richarlison, but a scan has shown no major damage.

Thiago is still unlikely to play against Ajax this week, but his condition is described as being ‘not so serious’, meaning he shouldn’t be out for too long.
That’s a small boost, but Van Dijk’s potential season-ending injury will of course dominate the headlines, especially given the lack of proven quality depth at Jurgen Klopp’s disposal.
