According to The Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur insiders were ‘taken aback’ by Mauricio Pochettino’s comments about changing his job title earlier this week.

Tottenham clinched the Audi Cup on Wednesday evening, beating Bayern Munich on penalties at the Allianz Arena ahead of the new Premier League season.

That came after beating Real Madrid 1-0 on Tuesday, but Pochettino offered some strange comments straight after that victory.

Pochettino, as quoted by The Guardian, suggested that Tottenham should change his job title to ‘coach’ rather than ‘manager’ because he has no input over transfers.

Tottenham have signed three players this summer in Tanguy Ndombele, Jack Clarke and Kion Etete, with the latter two players for the future and Ndombele a club-record signing.

It’s now claimed that Spurs staff were ‘taken aback’ by Pochettino’s comments, with the Tottenham boss seemingly catching them off guard – but Spurs won’t be changing his job title.

There has been a staggering outpouring of support from Spurs fans since Pochettino made those comments, with many begging chairman Daniel Levy to back his manager with signings ahead of next week’s transfer deadline.

Spurs won’t be changing their structure, which features Levy, Pochettino, chief scout Steve Hitchen and head of development John McDermott as a transfer committee, and won’t sign players without Pochettino’s approval.

Pochettino’s comments come at a key time, as Spurs need reinforcements. The signing of Ndombele was great, but moves for Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani Lo Celso have stalled for more than two months now, and Pochettino may well be putting pressure on Levy to get deals done – even if his job title isn’t going to change.
