Willy Boly has been one of the unsung heroes for Wolverhampton Wanderers this season… but will he move to Molineux from FC Porto on a permanent basis?
All the eyes have been firmly clasped on Diego Jota and Ruben Neves this season but another former Porto star has emerged as one of the Championship’s very best since signing up to fight on the frontline of the Wolves’ revolution.
Willy Boly has been simply exceptional at the back for the league leaders though it’s only now that his impact is starting to be noticed. It is no coincidence that Wolves have kept 10 clean sheets in the 16 Championship games he has started.
And it was only after he limped off against Millwall on Boxing Day with 17 minutes to go that The Lions grabbed an equaliser.
So with Wolves hoping to tie down loanees Jota and Leo Bonatini to permanent deals, it should come as little surprise to learn that they are desperate to keep Boly at Molineux too for the long-term.
Portuguese outlet O Jogo is reporting that Wolves may pay up to £10.6 million to sign the Frenchman in January – double the fee that Porto paid Braga for his services back in August 2016. And on current form, Boly would be worth every penny.
Wolves were made to work in order to bring the former France Under-19 international to Molineux with Boly’s former Porto boss Nuno Espirito Santo, now in the dugout at Wolves, made a personal phone call to the centre-back to convince him to make the move to the Black Country in his wake.
And, per A Bola, Boly rejected Wolves in 2016 because he did not want to play in the Championship. But with Wolves leading the table, it seems only a matter of time before Boly escapes the second tier.
