Aston Villa appear to be closing in on Thierry Henry.
According to The Mirror, Aston Villa are prepared to meet Thierry Henry’s £40,000-a-week wage demands – and there are just two other managers in with a shout of landing the job.
Villa sacked manager Steve Bruce on Wednesday after a run of just one win in nine games, with the axe falling less than 24 hours after a 3-3 home draw with Preston North End.
A 2-1 defeat to Millwall on Saturday showed that his successor faces a tough challenge at Villa Park despite a squad crammed with big names – and new owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens are looking for a big-name manager to take over.
Thierry Henry has been linked with the job since the summer, and The Mirror report that the Frenchman is closing in on the job, and could be appointed this week.
With Sawiris a major Arsenal fan, it’s believed Belgium coach Henry is nearing his first managerial role, and could be assisted by ex-Villa and Chelsea defender John Terry.
It’s claimed that Henry was in talks about becoming Bordeaux manager over the summer, but they refused to meet his £40,000-a-week demands, with Villa now willing to pay that £2million salary.
The report even adds that there are just two other managers who could stop Henry from landing the job, with Rui Faria and Brendan Rodgers still in the frame.
Faria has allegedly been pushed by super-agent Jorge Mendes, who has strong ties to the Villa owners, whilst Celtic boss Rodgers has been frustrated at a perceived lack of backing at Parkhead.
Rodgers would surely be the dream appointment, but it seems unlikely that he would trade Celtic for the Championship right now, whilst Faria’s position in the three-horse race appears to be a Mendes special, with Henry unsurprisingly the favourite right now.
