According to UOL Esporte, Arsenal target Gerson wants to stay put at Flamengo amid speculation over his future.

An interesting rumour emerged about Gerson over the weekend. His father spoke to Yahoo Sports, and claimed that Arsenal are pursuing his son.

Marcos Santos claimed that it’s not Edu, but rather Raul Sanllehi driving the move. Sanllehi wanted Gerson at Barcelona, and is now keen again.

However, UOL Esporte now claim that Gerson doesn’t actually want to go, for one very important reason.

Gerson allegedly wants to break into the Brazil team, and thinks his best chance is if he stays and plays regularly with Flamengo.

A move to Europe would be a gamble; after all, he had limited success with Roma and Fiorentina before returning to Brazil in 2019.

Flamengo would seemingly want the full €70million (£61million) release clause paid in order to let Gerson leave, so a deal with Arsenal now looks unlikely.

The Gunners won’t have big money to spend this summer, and whilst Mikel Arteta does need a midfielder, Gerson’s plans to stay put mean he may not be the man to join.
