According to Record in Portugal, Spurs want to sign Sporting midfielder Joao Palhinha this summer.

The London club are apparently willing to pay €20m (£17m) for the midfielder, but that figure won’t get him this summer, with Sporting reportedly pointing towards his release clause, which stands at an eye-watering £51m.

Spurs certainly want the Portuguese international, but what type of player would they be getting if he signed?

Well, former Manchester United man Nani has previously gone on the record to speak about the 6 ft 3 midfielder, and it sounds as though he’s not the most technical player.

“I make a positive analysis of Palhinha. He was a player who, in my day, didn’t seem capable of putting two passes together. He went to SC Braga (on loan last season) and now he’s a different player,” Nani said.

“He’s aggressive and gives security to the midfield. He recovers possession.”

Palhinha would come into Spurs as an aggressive midfield destroyer, and you’d have to imagine that this signing may allow Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to play in a more creative role akin to the one we saw him in at Euro 2020.

Spurs want to sign the former Braga loanee, but it seems as though they’re going to have to pay a pretty penny to get this one over the line.
