According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on Rui Pedro Braz as a potential replacement for Sporting Director, Fabio Paratici.
Paratici is currently facing a potential ban from football due to his misdealings at Juventus, and Spurs are said to be bracing for the worst-case scenario – as reported by Alasdair Gold on a recent Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast.
Spurs are now looking at contingency plans, and seem to have their eyes on Rui Pedro Braz from Benfica.
The 44-year-old has been the General Director at Benfica since 2021, and he has made a big impact with the Portuguese club.
Under his leadership, the club received large transfer fees for players like Darwin Nunez and Enzo Fernandez from Liverpool and Chelsea, while also remaining very competitive in Europe and domestically.
Of course, Braz is also helped out by Rui Costa at Benfica, but he does play a key role in these deals.
Braz’s success with Benfica has not gone unnoticed, and his experience and success in the transfer market have attracted the attention of several European clubs, including Chelsea who recently courted the Benfica chief.
With his eye for talent and proven track record, Braz could be the ideal candidate to replace Paratici.
Interestingly, Braz made his name in the game as a TV commentator and analyst, and this isn’t the first time we’ve seen someone from the media transition into a backroom role.
Victor Orta at Leeds started out as a journalist, while Tom Worville recently took on a key role at RB Leipzig off the back of writing for The Athletic.
It remains to be seen who the North London club will appoint as their next Sporting Director, but it will be interesting to see how this affects Antonio Conte’s future at the club, because Paratici has been his key ally since joining Spurs.
In the meantime, Tottenham fans will be keeping their fingers crossed that Paratici is not banned from football and can continue his work as the club’s Sporting Director.
If Paratici is banned, Spurs will have to scramble for a replacement, and Braz isn’t the worst option in the world to say the least.
