According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur believe that Serge Aurier can emerge as cover at centre back if they don’t make a new signing.
Spurs have been in the market for central defensive help, but moves for Milan Skriniar and Merih Demiral have collapsed according to Corriere Dello Sport.
Tottenham are now running out of time to get a deal done for a new centre back, and it seems that they have a couple of emergency ideas in mind.
It’s claimed that Antonio Rudiger remains an option, but Spurs view Aurier and Ben Davies as centre back options if a new defender doesn’t arrive.
Aurier, 27, offers plenty going forward as a right back, but some have questioned his defensive ability, especially as he seems rash in the tackle and liable to switch off.
Converting the Ivorian to play as a centre back seems like a gamble, especially at just 5ft 9in tall, but he did actually play as a right-sided centre back in a 3-5-2 setup at Toulouse in the 2013-14 season.

Davies has also played as a centre back at times for Spurs, and could fit as a left-sided centre back after Tottenham lost Jan Vertonghen this summer.
Spurs fans may not like the idea of emergency options already being planned, but Jose Mourinho does also have Toby Alderweireld, Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga, so the situation could be a lot worse.
