According to Sky Sports, Tottenham are currently in talks to hire Roberto Martínez as their new manager.
The 47-year-old is currently in charge of the Belgium national team, who he has impressively guided to No.1 in the world rankings.
Interestingly, Sky Sports add that Martínez has told friends he’s looking forward to quitting his current job and getting back to club management after EURO 2020 ends.
The former Wigan boss also has admirers over at Arsenal.
Sky Sports mention that Ralf Rangnick and Graham Potter are also on the list of candidates to replace José Mourinho.
In our view, hiring Martínez would be a risky move by Daniel Levy.
Admittedly, the Spaniard has done well with Belgium, and also guided Wigan to an FA Cup final win over Manchester City in 2013.
Across his career, he has recorded an eye-catching 217 wins, while his teams have always played an attractive style of football.
However, he was sacked by Everton in May 2016, as fans arranged protests against his management before the Toffees pulled the trigger (BBC).
In that respect, his track record does not suggest he’ll be able to cope with the demands expected at a club of Tottenham’s stature.
With tensions already running high on the white side of north London, Martínez would be walking into a pressurised environment in which he will simply have to hit the ground running.
Levy really does have to get this appointment right.
Speaking of protests, there is already a huge amount of discontent aimed at Tottenham’s boardroom from the fanbase.
Should Levy, ENIC and co make another poor appointment, things could spill over to the point of no return.
It really is make or break time for Spurs, especially with Harry Kane’s future up in the air too.
It’s one of the hardest jobs up for grabs this summer, and in our view, Martínez hasn’t shown enough to prove he can cope.
