Tottenham Hotspur fans will have liked what they saw from Jannik Vestergaard in midweek.

The Denmark international posted a brilliant defensive performance during his country’s Euro 2020 semi-final defeat by England at Wembley.

According to The Times, Spurs are already in talks to sign the towering Southampton centre-back, who stands at 6’6.

But a familiar face may potentially spoil that.

The Athletic have reported that Roma boss Jose Mourinho – sacked by Tottenham in April – is also keen on bringing the player to Italy.

However, the report adds that his friendship with Denmark team-mate and Spurs midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could help the Lilywhites win the race, with staying in the Premier League also Vestergaard’s priority right now.

What a signing he could be

Vestergaard has already proven himself a fine defender and he’d be a quality addition by Fabio Paratici in North London – and a much-needed one.

It speaks volumes that Tottenham’s best central defender is still a 32-year-old Toby Alderweireld, who could also leave the club this summer.

That’ll leave Nuno Espirito Santo with just Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon and Eric Dier by way of established centre-back options.

With that in mind, yes, Vestergaard would be very much needed and if Tottenham pip Mourinho to his signing, even better.
