Report: Spurs plan new January move for Barcelona misfit Andre Gomes after deadline day deal collapsed

Tottenham could launch a new move for Barcelona’s Andre Gomes in January.

According to the Daily Star, Tottenham Hotspur are planning a new move to sign Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes in the January transfer window, after their deadline day deal collapsed.

Spurs were busy on transfer deadline day, bringing in defender Serge Aurier and striker Fernando Llorente from Paris Saint-Germain and Swansea City respectively, but two signings so nearly became three on the final day of the transfer window.

Tottenham spent a large portion of the day attempting to seal a loan deal for Andre Gomes, but the Daily Mail reported that Barcelona pulled the plug on the deal in the final moments of deadline day as they couldn’t sign a replacement.

That was a real blow for Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, who ended the window without signing a new midfielder to challenge with Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama – but he could still have eyes for Gomes in 2018.

The Daily Star report that Tottenham remain keen to sign Gomes when the transfer window re-opens in January, with Spurs planning a new move to sign the Portuguese international in the new year.

It’s claimed that Spurs believe Gomes will be available in January, and whilst West Ham were also keen on deadline day, the midfielder is understood to be keen on working with Mauricio Pochettino, meaning Spurs may well be confident of sealing deal.

Gomes, 24, impressed with both Benfica and Valencia to earn a 2016 move to Barcelona, with his big-money move made with the intention of him becoming an important part of the Barca midfield, alongside Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic and Andres Iniesta.

However, Gomes struggled for confidence last season and has slipped down the pecking order with the arrival of ex-Spurs flop Paulinho, meaning Barca are ready to cut their losses and ship Gomes out on loan with a view to a permanent deal.

A talented passer of the ball, Gomes has 26 Portugal caps and could bring real quality to the Tottenham midfield, with a new January move potentially in the pipeline.
