According to a report from ESPN, Tottenham have joined the race to sign West Bromwich Albion defender Ahmed Hegazi during the summer, with West Ham also pursuing the Egyptian.

Despite the season ending in relegation, Hegazi has been something of a revelation for the Baggies this past campaign. His previous stint in Europe was Fiorentina was blighted by injury, but the 27-year-old has been a regular for West Brom, playing every single Premier League game.

ESPN reports that he is likely to have a number of offers to stay in the top flight this summer with West Ham and Leicester City both interested in signing the centre-back. But they will have to see off competition from Spurs for his signature.

ESPN adds that Hegazi is one of the names that features on Tottenham’s shortlist as they consider potential defensive targets for a window that may well see them lose Toby Alderweireld.

Toby Alderweireld #4 of Tottenham Hotspur passes the ball in the second half against Roma during the International Champions Cup on July 25, 2017 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.

The news that Spurs are keen is likely to be disappointing for West Ham and Leicester as it could certainly be argued that Hegazi should find a move to join Mauricio Pochettino’s side the most tempting.

His chances of first-team football would be better if he joined the Hammers or Foxes, but Tottenham can offer Champions League football once again next season and they will also be hoping to end their wait for silverware.

News of the interest in Hegazi may not be met by an overwhelmingly positive reaction due to West Brom’s relegation and the fact that Alderweireld is one of the best defenders in Europe so getting his replacement right is crucial.

It is not clear whether Hegazi arriving would end Spurs’ pursuit for further defensive reinforcement, but he is definitely a talented player who could prove to be a very decent option for the club if he ends up joining.
